The Parish Messenger

December 1999

In the bleak midwinter

In the darkest time of the year we pause to commemorate the coming of the Light. When all the earth is wrapped in cold and darkness we focus on the warmth and splendor found in a poor manger. We hearken back to a bleak, midwinter’s eve and the shivering bundle lying in mean estate and we consider Love come to dwell with us.

Christ continues to come to us: in His Word proclaimed at the Holy Gospel, in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, in the persons of those rather unlovely creatures who come to our door seeking money and food and clothing and someone to listen to their story. The humble babe of the manger would understand their plight. We must too.

In this season of giving, plan to give of your heart to Our Blessed Savior. He wants no earthly throne, He could have had it. He wants the throne of your life. He wants no new star shining to lead the lost to Him, He has you to do that by the example which you set for others. He wants no gifts of gold and savory incense, He desires above all the sweet fragrance of a life lived in joyful obedience to the commands of His heavenly Father.

As we enter the season of Advent and contemplate the entrance of Our Lord into human history, let us prepare to have Him enter deeply into the mystery of our own lives, bringing there His light and His healing, His holiness and righteousness, His love and His glory.

Devotional Societies

St. B’s has been blessed with the presence of several devotional societies in its 130 year history. Among these are The Confraternity of the Blessed Sacrament, The Guild of All Souls, The Order of St. Vincent and The Society of Mary.

Two of these societies are gearing up for organizational meetings to be held this month. The Society of Mary will meet immediately following the Solemn High Mass on the feast of the Conception of Our Blessed Lady, Wednesday, December 8 at 6:30 p.m. Our Ward is under the patronage of our Lady of Fair Love. Any Catholic with a devotion to our Blessed Mother is welcome to join the Society.

The Confraternity of the Blessed Sacrament will meet after Evensong and Benediction on Sunday, December 19. Anyone with a desire to further the goals of the Confraternity is invited to attend and gain further information. The goals of the Confraternity are

To give honor to the Person of our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament.
Mutual intercession at the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass.
The promotion of the observance of the Catholic and primitive practice of receiving the Holy Communion fasting.
