Lent Schedule

Our Lord withdrew from the world for a period of forty days of fasting, prayer and self-examination. The forty days of Lent present us with an opportunity to emulate Christ and to draw back from the pressures and demands of our busy lives in order to fast, pray and take stock of our relationships with our families, with our associates and with our God. Like every opportunity, there is no way to demand compliance, but a holy Lent kept in a spirit of openness to growth and conversion will undoubtedly pay off in an Easter of fulfilled promise and joy. This list of events is offered as an aid in your Lenten planning. The opportunities for corporate prayer are many and will hopefully supply the springboard for private prayer and works of sacrifice as we approach the great mystery which is resurrection life in and through Christ Jesus.

May this Lent be a time of renewal and growth in the Christian life and faith.

Fasting
The Prayerbook requires that two days be kept as fasts: Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. It is the custom of those who hold the Catholic Faith to observe the entire season of Lent with a fast. There are no hard and fast rules as to what constitutes a fast. Some people limit food intake to one meal a day. Others refrain from between-meal snacks. What is important is not the method in which we fast, but that we hallow this time by fasting in some manner.

Abstinence
It is customary in Catholic tradition to abstain from meat on the Fridays of Lent. Many people also mark the Wednesdays of Lent by abstinence. The minimum requirement would be abstinence on Ash Wednesday and all Fridays.
