The St. Barnabas food basket (currently located under the tract rack in the narthex) has a new purpose. As you know, there is considerable need in our community and now – by providing food to those less fortunate in the area – our food basket is making a difference.
In February, contents of the basket were delivered to Rainbow House, located at 78th Street and Farnam. Affiliated with Children’s Hospital, Rainbow House consists 56 apartments for use by families who have children under going treatment at the hospital.
We are currently collecting foods and other necessities for Victory Apartments, operated under the auspices of the American Legion. These are small apartments at 8th Street and Dorcas for American veterans. Some are disabled, some have jobs, and some are elderly. Many are living at or near poverty level. Anything we can provide will be welcome.
Please think about the basket when you do your own grocery shopping, and pick up a couple of extra cans of soup or tuna, or some packaged dinners (HyVee and Bakers both have great prices on these). Other needs include toiletries (i.e. shampoo, soap, toothpaste) and paper goods (such as bathroom tissue and paper towels). Thank you for support in this effort in assisting those in need.
